1. Electrical Test&Tag
In New Zealand and Australia, electrical test and tagis the process of inspecting and testing portable electrical appliances to ensure they are safe for use. It involves a visual check for damage followed by electrical testing using a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT).
The Test and Tag Process
- Visual Inspection: Checking for frayed cords, damaged plugs, or visible defects. Over 90% of faults are found at this stage.
- Electrical Testing: Using a PAT device to check earth continuity, insulation resistance, and polarity.
- Tagging: Attaching a durable tag to the appliance indicating the test date, the tester's name, and the next due date.
- Reporting: Maintaining a digital or manual log of all test results for compliance records.
Legal Requirements & Standards
- Primary Standard: The process follows the AS/NZS 3760 standard for in-service safety inspection of electrical equipment.
- Mandatory Industries: Testing is strictly required every 3 months for harsh environments like construction, mining, and demolition (under AS/NZS 3012).
- General Workplace: For other industries, while not a direct legislative requirement, employers have a "duty of care" under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 to ensure a safe workplace.
Testing Frequencies (Standard Intervals)
Frequencies are determined by the environment and risk of damage:
- 3 Months: Construction and demolition sites.
- 6 Months: Factories, workshops, and production areas.
- 12 Months: Environments where equipment is prone to flexing or abuse (e.g., communal kitchens).
- 5 Years: Non-hostile environments where cords are not moved (e.g., office server rooms).
